Why convert AVIF to PNG
AVIF is great at making small files, but it is still a young format, and not every program knows how to open it. PNG solves that problem in a different way than JPG does. Instead of trading quality for a small size, PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is. That is what lossless means: when you save a PNG, nothing is discarded. On top of that, PNG is supported by every image editor and viewer worth mentioning, from quick built in viewers to full editing suites. If you have ever opened an AVIF and had an app reject it, converting to PNG is the simplest way to get a file you can actually work with.
PNG also keeps transparency, which matters if your AVIF carries see through areas. Logos, icons, cut out product shots, and overlays all rely on a transparent background, and PNG preserves that alpha channel cleanly. This makes PNG the right pick when you plan to edit the image or layer it over different backgrounds. The one thing to keep in mind is size. Because PNG stores everything without lossy compression, the result will be larger than the original AVIF, sometimes by a wide margin. If a smaller file matters more than transparency or perfect quality, JPG is the better target. But when you want a clean, editable, widely supported copy, PNG is the format to choose.

Bit depth: what changes and what does not
AVIF can hold 10 or 12 bits per colour channel. The PNG this converter produces uses 8 bits per channel, because that is what browsers work with when they draw an image. For ordinary photos and graphics, 8 bits is what you were seeing on screen anyway, so nothing visible changes. For HDR images or high bit depth editing, it is a real reduction.
Transparency comes through intact
AVIF supports transparency and so does PNG. Transparent and semi transparent areas convert exactly, which makes this the right converter for logos and cut out images delivered as AVIF.
Measured: how much bigger the PNG gets
AVIF is lossy and extremely efficient, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. Across twelve of the illustrations used on this site, PNG files came to about eleven times the size of AVIF files of good quality. Choose PNG when you need a lossless master or transparency, and AVIF to JPG when you only need to open or share the image.
