Email image sizes

Most email templates are built 600 pixels wide. These are common practice rather than rules.

How to turn inches or millimetres into pixels

Pixels are inches multiplied by the print resolution. A 4 × 6 inch photo at 300 DPI needs 4 × 300 by 6 × 300, which is 1200 × 1800 pixels. For millimetres, divide by 25.4 first: the 35 mm width of a UK passport photo at 300 DPI is 35 ÷ 25.4 × 300, about 413 pixels.

300 DPI is the usual target for anything held in the hand, like photos, cards and flyers. Posters seen from a few steps away look fine at 150 DPI, which halves the pixels needed in each direction. Screens ignore DPI completely and only use the pixel dimensions.

Aspect ratio matters more than pixel size

Getting the shape right matters more than hitting the exact pixel count. A 2160 × 2160 image uploaded to a square slot is simply scaled down and looks fine. A 1080 × 1920 image uploaded to a square slot is cropped, and the platform decides which part of your picture to throw away.

Safe zones: where your content survives

Full screen formats put their own buttons and captions on top of your image. Meta's ads guide for Stories recommends leaving about 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent on each side free of text and logos. On a 1080 × 1920 Story that is roughly the top 270 pixels, the bottom 670 pixels and 65 pixels on each side.

Banners have safe zones too. YouTube shows the full 2560 × 1440 banner only on TVs, so anything that must always be visible belongs in the central 1235 × 338 area. Profile pictures are usually shown as circles, which cut off the corners of a square image.

File size limits are separate from pixel size

Pixel dimensions and file size are two different limits, and a platform can reject an image for either one. A correctly sized photo can still fail an upload if it was saved at maximum quality, or as a PNG when a JPEG would have done. Compressing is usually the right fix, and forms with a hard limit are covered in the guide to making a photo an exact KB size.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Instagram post be?+
Instagram keeps photos between 1.91:1 and 4:5 at up to 1080 pixels wide. That means 1080 × 1350 for portrait, 1080 × 1080 for square and 1080 × 566 for landscape. Anything outside that range is cropped.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?+
YouTube's help asks for 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails, 16:9 and at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG or PNG. Shorts thumbnails are 2160 × 3840, 9:16. The file limit is 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer.
What size is a YouTube channel banner?+
At least 2048 × 1152 pixels, and 2560 × 1440 for the best result on TVs, up to 6 MB. Keep text and logos inside the central 1235 × 338 area, the part shown on every device.
What size is a Facebook cover photo?+
Facebook's help says Page cover photos load fastest as an sRGB JPG of 851 × 315 pixels under 100 KB. They show at 820 × 312 on computers and 640 × 360 on phones, and must be at least 400 × 150.
What size should a Story or Reel be?+
9:16, full screen. 1080 × 1920 is the usual size, and Meta's ads guide recommends 1440 × 2560 for Stories, which is the same shape. Leave about 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent on each side free of text.
What size is a LinkedIn banner?+
A personal profile background is 1584 × 396 pixels. A Company Page cover is 1512 × 256, and the Page logo is 400 × 400.
What is A4 in pixels?+
At 300 DPI, A4 (210 × 297 mm) is 2480 × 3508 pixels. At 150 DPI it is 1240 × 1754.
What size is a passport photo in pixels?+
A US passport photo is 2 × 2 inches, which is 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI. A UK photo is 35 × 45 mm, or 413 × 531 pixels, and the UK's online service asks for at least 600 × 750.
How do I convert inches or millimetres to pixels?+
Multiply inches by the DPI: 4 inches at 300 DPI is 1200 pixels. For millimetres, divide by 25.4 first: 35 mm at 300 DPI is 35 ÷ 25.4 × 300, about 413 pixels.
What size is a link preview image?+
1200 × 630 pixels at 1.91:1, which Facebook and LinkedIn both use for shared links. Meta's minimum is 600 × 315 and the limit is 8 MB.
Why does my image look blurry after uploading?+
Platforms resize and re compress everything you upload. An image smaller than the display size gets scaled up, which is what blurs it, so upload at the recommended size or larger, in the right shape.

Need to resize an image right now?

Set exact pixel dimensions in the resize tool, or crop to a fixed ratio first. Both run in your browser with no upload.
