What makes a good passport photo?
Every government that issues passports has specific rules about photos. The US State Department has a full checklist. The short version: plain white or off-white background, face centered and clearly visible, neutral expression (closed mouth, no big smile), eyes open, no glasses, no hats, good even lighting with no shadows on your face or behind your head.
The size requirements this tool handles. The photo quality requirements are on you. A well-lit selfie in front of a white wall works fine — most people just don't realize their phone camera is good enough. You don't need a photography studio.
One practical tip: take 5-10 shots in slightly different positions and pick the one where the lighting is most even. Shadows are the most common reason for rejection.
How to print your passport photo
Download the printable sheet (4x6 inch layout, multiple copies). You have two options: print at home on photo paper — most inkjet and laser printers handle 4x6 — or take the file to Walmart Photo, Walgreens, CVS, FedEx, or any local print shop and print a 4x6.
If you print at home, use photo paper not regular paper. Passport offices expect glossy or matte photo paper. Regular printer paper looks obviously wrong and may get rejected. The print cost at a retail photo center is usually under $0.50 for a 4x6. Cheaper than any online passport photo service.
