Why does Apple use HEIC?

HEIC is roughly 50% more efficient than JPG. A photo that would be 5MB as JPG is about 2.5MB as HEIC with the same visual quality. This saves significant storage on your iPhone — especially if you take thousands of photos.

The downside is compatibility. Many websites, email clients, and Windows applications still don't understand HEIC. When you need to share a photo with someone who isn't on Apple, or upload to a platform that only accepts JPG — that's when you need a converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is HEIC?+
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPG at the same quality. The problem is that many apps, websites, and Windows computers can't open HEIC files natively.
Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?+
Windows doesn't include HEIC support by default. You either need to install the HEIC Image Extension from the Microsoft Store, or convert your HEIC files to JPG. This converter does it instantly in your browser.
Is the quality the same?+
Very close. HEIC and JPG are both lossy formats. Converting at 90% quality produces a JPG that is visually identical to the original HEIC for all practical purposes.
Does this work with Live Photos?+
This tool converts the still image portion of a Live Photo. The video component is not extracted. For that, you'd need a specialized video tool.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?+
No. The entire conversion happens in your browser. Your HEIC file is decoded locally using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to any server.
Can I convert HEIF files too?+
Yes. HEIC and HEIF are essentially the same format. Both file extensions are supported.
