JPG vs PNG — when to use which

JPG uses lossy compression. Every time you save a JPG, it throws away some data to make the file smaller. This is great for photos on websites where file size matters. But if you need to edit the image further, each save degrades quality a little more.

PNG uses lossless compression. Nothing is thrown away. PNG also supports transparency — you can have shapes with see-through backgrounds, which JPG cannot do. The tradeoff is larger file sizes. Use PNG when you need transparency, when you plan to edit the image more, or when pixel-perfect quality matters.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert JPG to PNG?+
PNG is lossless — no quality is lost during saving. PNG also supports transparency (alpha channel), which JPG does not. If you need to edit an image further, overlay it on different backgrounds, or preserve maximum quality, PNG is the better format.
Will the file size increase?+
Yes, usually. PNG files are larger than JPG because PNG uses lossless compression while JPG uses lossy compression. A 500KB JPG might become 2-4MB as PNG. This is normal and expected — you are trading file size for quality.
Can I convert multiple JPGs at once?+
This tool converts one image at a time. For batch conversion, use our Convert Image tool which handles multiple formats.
Does this work with JPEG files too?+
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format — just different file extensions. Both work perfectly with this converter.
Is the conversion private?+
Completely. Your image never leaves your browser. There is no server upload. The conversion uses your device's Canvas API.
