Terms of Service

Last updated: March 22, 2026. These terms cover what FreeImageTools is, what you can do here, what you cannot do here, and what happens if something goes wrong. We wrote this in plain English on purpose. Most legal documents are designed to confuse you into agreeing. This one is designed so you actually know what you signed up for. Effective the moment you use any tool on this site.

1. What FreeImageTools Is§ 1.0

FreeImageTools.org is a free, browser-based image toolkit. There are 25 tools. They all run entirely in your browser using JavaScript and the HTML5 Canvas API. That means your images are processed on your device, not on our servers.

We are not a cloud storage service. We are not a photo editing subscription. We are not a SaaS platform with tiers and upgrades and enterprise plans. We are a website with tools that help you do stuff to images. You come, you use a tool, you download your result, you leave. That's the whole thing.

The site is operated independently. No venture capital. No data broker backing. No advertising network secretly collecting your files. Just tools that work.

/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

FreeImageTools is a website with 21 image tools. You drop an image in, do something to it, download it. Nothing gets uploaded to us. Nothing gets stored. We are not spying on your photos. We genuinely do not have the infrastructure to do that even if we wanted to.

2. What You Are Agreeing To§ 2.0

By using any tool on FreeImageTools.org, you agree to these Terms. You do not need to create an account. You do not need to click a checkbox. Using the site counts as agreement.

That might feel sneaky, but it is the standard for free web tools. It also means there is no barrier to just starting to use the site, which is the point. No signup wall. No agree-to-terms popup you have to close every visit.

If you use FreeImageTools on behalf of a company or organization, you are agreeing to these Terms on that entity's behalf too. If you do not have authority to do that, you should check before using the site for professional purposes.

/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

You use the site, you've agreed to this. It's not a trick. We just don't make you create an account first because that would be annoying and unnecessary for a free tool site. The agreement is still real though.

3. What the Tools Actually Do§ 3.0

Every image processing operation on FreeImageTools runs locally in your browser. When you drop an image into Compress Image, your browser reads that file into memory and our JavaScript code processes it. The result is generated in your browser and offered for download. The image does not travel over the internet to reach us.

The only exceptions are features that explicitly require a network request, which will be clearly labeled. As of this writing, no core tool sends your images to any external server. The background removal tool uses a WebAssembly model that downloads once and runs locally from that point on.

We do load standard website resources from CDNs including fonts and scripts. Those requests do not include your image files. They are just loading interface assets like any other website does.

// GOOD TO KNOW

The background removal tool downloads a machine learning model file the first time you use it. That download is the model itself, roughly 40MB, coming from our CDN. Your image is not in that download. After the first load, the model is cached in your browser and does not need to download again.

4. Your Files and Your Privacy§ 4.0

Your image files stay on your device. We do not receive them, store them, analyze them, or share them. There is no server-side processing pipeline. There is no database of uploaded images. There is nothing to delete from our end because nothing arrives at our end.

When you close the browser tab, the image is gone from our perspective. Actually it was never there from our perspective. The processing happened on your CPU, in your RAM, in your browser's sandbox environment.

This means a few things practically. We cannot recover a file you accidentally closed. We cannot retrieve a processed image you forgot to download. We have no record of what images you worked with. We cannot be compelled by any legal order to produce images you processed here, because we don't have them.

We do collect standard website analytics data: page views, approximate geographic region, device type, browser type. This is aggregate data to understand site traffic. We do not fingerprint individual users. We do not track what files you work with. See our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.

/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

Your cat photos, your passport scan, your confidential business documents, whatever you put through these tools. We never see any of it. Not because we are especially virtuous, but because the architecture makes it technically impossible. The image never leaves your computer. That's the actual thing that's happening here.

5. What You Can Do Here§ 5.0

You can use all 25 tools for free. Personal use, commercial use, professional use. Compress images for your website. Resize photos for client deliverables. Convert formats for a print job. Make passport photos for your own application. Extract a color palette for a brand project. All of it is fine.

You can process as many images as you want. There is no daily limit, no monthly quota, no "you've used your free tier" message. The tools run on your device so usage does not cost us compute resources per image.

You can share the site with anyone. Link to specific tool pages. Recommend it to clients, colleagues, students, whoever needs it. The tools are here to be used.

/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

Use it for whatever you need. Compress 400 images in a session if that's what you're doing. We genuinely do not care and we cannot even track it. The only thing we ask is that you don't do the specific things listed in the next section.

6. What You Cannot Do§ 6.0

There are a few things that are off-limits. Most of them are obvious. We are listing them anyway because that's how legal documents work.

  • Scraping or automated mass requests. Do not write a bot that hammers our site with automated requests. This includes scraping our pages, auto-downloading our scripts, or running automated image processing loops through our interface. If you need batch processing at scale, build something local using open source libraries like sharp or ffmpeg.
  • Reverse engineering or copying our tools. You cannot copy our source code, decompile our JavaScript, or use our implementation as the basis for a competing site without permission. The tools themselves use open-source libraries which have their own licenses. Our specific implementation, design, and architecture are ours.
  • Processing illegal content. Do not use these tools to process, prepare, or manipulate images that are illegal in your jurisdiction. This includes but is not limited to child sexual abuse material. We report this to authorities.
  • Attempting to compromise the site. Do not try to inject malicious code, exploit vulnerabilities, or interfere with the site's operation. If you find a security vulnerability, report it to us at security@freeimagetools.org and we'll take it seriously.
  • Framing or embedding without permission. Do not embed our tools inside your site via iframe without asking first. We're usually fine with it if you ask, but doing it without asking is not okay.
/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

Don't build a bot, don't steal our code, don't process illegal content, don't attack the site. That's basically the whole list. If you're a normal person using this site to compress a JPEG, none of this applies to you and you don't need to worry about it.

7. No Uptime Guarantees§ 7.0

We keep the site running as reliably as we can. But we are not promising 99.9% uptime with SLA credits and incident response teams. This is a free tool site, not enterprise cloud infrastructure.

The site may go down for maintenance. It may occasionally be slow. New tool deployments can briefly cause issues. We fix problems as fast as we can when they happen.

We also do not guarantee that every tool will produce perfect results on every image. The background removal AI is good but not perfect. The EXIF reader may not support every camera manufacturer's proprietary format. The HEIC converter relies on a WebAssembly library that works on most files but not all. We do not guarantee specific output quality for any tool.

If a tool is not doing what you expect, try the tool page's FAQ section. If the issue persists, report it at the feedback form on the homepage. We read every report and fix real bugs.

/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

We will try to keep it up and working. But if it's down one Tuesday afternoon, we're on it. We're not going to compensate you for missed deadlines caused by site downtime. It's a free tool. Run a critical workflow on a free site at your own risk, basically.

8. Our Liability§ 8.0

FreeImageTools is provided "as is." We exclude all warranties to the maximum extent permitted by law. That means we are not liable for losses caused by tool errors, incorrect output, data loss on your device, or any other issue arising from your use of the site.

Practically speaking: if you compress an image and the compressed version looks bad, that is a quality issue you can address by adjusting the quality slider or not using our tool for that specific file. If you accidentally overwrite your original file with a lower-quality version and didn't keep a backup, we cannot restore it. We never had it.

In any case where we are found liable for something, our maximum liability to you is zero dollars, because the service is free and you paid nothing. Some jurisdictions do not allow complete liability exclusions. If local law gives you rights beyond what these terms provide, those local law rights apply.

/// HUMAN TRANSLATION

If something goes wrong with our tool and your image comes out wrong, we're sorry, but we're not paying you for it. The service is free. Back up your originals before processing anything important. That's just good practice with any image tool, paid or free.

9. Intellectual Property§ 9.0

The FreeImageTools name, logo, site design, and our specific implementation of these tools are our intellectual property. The underlying libraries we use are open source and have their own licenses (MIT, Apache, etc.) which we comply with.

Your images are yours. We have no claim over anything you process through our tools. The output file is yours. We did not create it. We just provided the tool that helped you create it.

If you believe we have used something that belongs to you without permission, email legal@freeimagetools.org. We take IP concerns seriously and respond.

10. Third-Party Services§ 10.0

FreeImageTools uses a small number of third-party services to operate the website infrastructure. These include our hosting provider, CDN for delivering site assets, and analytics service for understanding traffic patterns. None of these services receive your image files.

We link to or reference third-party tools and resources in our blog content. Those links are for informational purposes. We do not endorse every tool we mention and we are not responsible for third-party site content or practices.

The open-source libraries that power our tools (browser-image-compression, heic2any, jsPDF, react-dropzone, @imgly/background-removal, and others) are developed and maintained by their respective authors. We are grateful for the open-source ecosystem that makes this site possible.

11. Changes to These Terms§ 11.0

We can update these Terms. When we make material changes that affect your rights or how the site works in significant ways, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top and post a notice on the site.

Continuing to use FreeImageTools after updated Terms are posted means you accept the updated Terms. If you disagree with a change, stop using the site. Since there is no account to close and no data to export, stopping is genuinely as simple as not coming back.

We keep previous versions of these Terms archived. Email legal@freeimagetools.org if you need a specific historical version for any reason.

12. Contact Us§ 12.0

We are reachable by email. Real people read these, not a ticketing system black hole.
