Why convert HEIC to PNG
Since iOS 11, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC by default. The reason is space: HEIC packs the same picture into a much smaller file than JPG, so you can keep thousands more photos on the same phone. That is a nice win until you move a photo somewhere else. Windows does not open HEIC out of the box, and plenty of apps and upload forms reject it too. You end up with a photo you took yourself that your own laptop refuses to show. Converting to PNG fixes that. PNG is lossless, so it keeps the full detail of the decoded photo, and it opens in every viewer and editor without any extra plugins.
Privacy is worth a mention here, because these are personal photos. The decoding happens locally through WebAssembly running in your browser, and the conversion to PNG runs on your device as well. Nothing is uploaded, so your pictures stay with you. One practical note on format choice: PNG produces a larger file than HEIC because it stores every pixel without lossy compression. If you mainly care about a smaller file and do not need lossless quality, JPG is the better target and will save space. But when you want the cleanest possible copy for editing or archiving, or you simply want a file that opens everywhere, PNG is the dependable choice.
