Who actually needs a JFIF file in 2026?
Fair question, since most of the internet spends its energy converting JFIF files away — our JFIF to PNG and JFIF to JPG pages get far more visitors than this one ever will. But the reverse need is real: some legacy content management systems, government and enterprise upload portals, and old lab or records software validate uploads against an extension whitelist that was written when JFIF was the official name, and they will reject photo.jpg while happily accepting the identical file called photo.jfif.
If you have met one of those systems, you already know the frustration. This page is the fix: it encodes your PNG as a standard JPEG — which is what a JFIF file is on the inside — and names the output .jfif so the picky validator lets it through.
What happens to your PNG on the way
Two things change. First, the image is re-encoded from PNG (lossless) to JPEG (lossy) — at 90% quality the difference is invisible for photos and screenshots, and the file usually gets dramatically smaller. Second, transparency goes away: JPEG has no alpha channel, so any transparent regions are flattened onto white. Logos and graphics with transparency are better off staying PNG, or going to WebP, which keeps the alpha channel.
And to be clear about the obvious alternative: if your destination accepts .jpg — and almost everything does — use PNG to JPG instead. The encoding is identical; .jpg is simply the name the rest of the world agreed on. This page is for the exceptions.
